| More bad press for Smallville... |
[May. 22nd, 2009|12:00 am] |
Television Without Pity compiled a list of the season's best and worst finales. Guess where Smallville landed?
Worst: Smallville Airdate: May 14, 2009 The whole season built to Superman saving Davis and/or Doomsday and Clark throwing down, and in the finale we got both! Unfortunately, they both sucked. In a fight that lasted about 60 seconds, Doomsday smacked Clark around a couple of times before Clark flew him into a mile-deep hole and trapped him down there off-screen, and the newly rescued human side of Davis promptly killed a redeemed Jimmy Olsen with a pipe. Oh, and that wasn't Jimmy, that was Henry, Jimmy's big brother, apparently. Thanks for making us care about this nobody.
You can read the whole list at televisionwithoutpity.com.
Edit: Also, aintitcoolnews.com ran a short article about the CW's new lineup, and their comment about SV's schedule change was too funny:
"* It looks like thirtysomething Tom Welling will finally get to stop playing Superboy, as “Smallville” has been cast off to Friday nights to die." |

| Monica's post! |
[Jun. 22nd, 2008|04:26 pm] |
So, I was nudged by Monica to post several days ago. It took me awhile, but here it is:
I've been quiet lately because I haven't been on LJ too much lately. I have been spending time on Facebook these past few weeks, and it's been so much fun connecting with people I haven't seen in ages. As an old friend pointed out, it's been 13 years since I graduated high school! It's great to see how people have changed, and yet stayed the same.
I know there was some drama around these parts earlier in the week. I don't want to say too much on the issue, other than it really made me re-think the way people treat each other. I'm amazed at how easily people respond to nastiness by being doubly nasty. I guess the old "treat people as you'd like to be treated" is lost on a lot of people.
That's really all I'd like to say on the whole thing.
Also, check out Allison Mack (well, her voice) in The Ant Bully today on Cartoon Network at 8 p.m. I never saw this one, so I set my DVR to record it.
Well, I'm off to work! |

| Chlois scene that makes me smile, day 1! |
[Mar. 1st, 2008|01:46 pm] |
I couldn't find this one on youtube, so I went with screencaps. One of my favorite Chlois/Chlark scenes is from Drone, where Clark runs for class president and Chloe struggles with choosing a candidate to endorse for The Torch. Although Chloe usually has a lot of faith in Clark, but politics isn't his thing and she questions his motives behind running for office:
Chloe: You're running because of Lana. Why am I not surprised?
Clark: No, I'm running because I think I can do a good job.
Chloe: All right, Clark. Whatever.
Clark: Hey, you know, Pete has faith in me, and so does Lana. It's interesting that you don't.
Chloe: I just want to know what you stand for.
Clark: I stand for truth, justice, and... other stuff.
Chloe: Okay, well, you want to be more specific? Like, tell me where you stand on the issues.
Clark: What issues do you want to talk about?
Chloe: Well, for starters, there's the plan to cut the arts budget, there's the appalling nutritional value of the cafeteria meals, the whole dress code debate, oh yeah, and not to mention that whole student privacy issues with the locker searches.
Clark: Whoa, slow down. I just decided to run last night.
Chloe: Okay, well, I think the man of tomorrow needs to get a platform for today.
********
Ultimately, Chloe endorses another candidate, and although Clark is pretty mad about it, he does take her criticism seriously by trying to develop some sort of platform. He loses the election, of course, and that leads us to the Talon, where Chloe shows up as Clark and Pete are licking their wounds:

Clark: Chloe, you were right to endorse him. He was the more qualified candidate, and I got caught up in the whole popularity rush.
Pete: Don't start gloating just because you guys won.
Chloe: Well, my candidate may have won, but my friends lost. I'm really proud of you tonight, Clark.
Clark: Why?
Chloe: Because you're exhibiting dignity in the face of defeat. It's the quality that all great leaders possess.

Earning Chloe's admiration clearly affects Clark. It's hard to tell from the caps, but he puffs his chest out and raises his head as Chloe talks about her pride in him and his dignity. It's like Chloe turns Clark's loss into a win.
As an aside, there's a very interesting B-plot with Lana going "to the mattresses" with a competing coffee shop. She does something underhanded (looks up The Beanery's health code violations and then has a reporter--NOT CHLOE--run a story on it) and she and Clark talk about it in the final scene:
Lana: It is. It's just I'm not sure I liked what I did. You know, playing dirty with the Beanery.
Clark: Maybe the mattress isn't for you.
Lana: I felt I had to choose between doing the right thing and being successful. The weird part is I kind of enjoyed being underhanded.
Clark: Lana Lang seduced by the dark side? Who would've thunk? Look, don't worry. We all get caught up. I got so caught up in the popularity thing, I almost forgot why I ran.
Given the most recent episodes, it's just VERY interesting. |

| Marjane! Colbert! Persepolis! |
[Jan. 29th, 2008|02:12 pm] |
How cool was it to see Marjane Satrapi on The Colbert Report last night?! Her Persepolis books are a favorite of mine, they're graphic novels about her life growing up Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It's a wonderful story, Marjane is a spirited and stubborn girl, and as she comes of age it becomes too dangerous for her to stay in Iran, so her parents send her away to boarding school. Like Maus (another favorite of mine), it's a personal story told amongst this backdrop of historical chaos, and it gives the reader a very intimate look at a country I really don't know much about.
There's a Persepolis movie out now, but unfortunately it's only playing in New York and Los Angeles, so I am just shit out of luck unless it comes out on DVD. Or I find a bootleg, whichever comes first. In the meantime, here's a look at the trailer:

[Jan. 7th, 2008|06:11 pm] |
Or, memo to hipster_killer, whom I met up for drinks the other night:
After leaving The Matador, I met a couple who were completely barefoot and completely trashed. They introduced themselves and started asking me to recommend another bar. They seemed nice, so we talked a little bit as we walked down the street. I veered away once I got near my car though, and they got all uppity because apparently, they thought I was going to go bar-hopping with them. I told them I was going home, but that they should go on and have a good time, but they started PLEADING, like, "Come on Marta, come with us, the party's just starting! Marta. Marta! MAAAAAAARTA!"
Anyways, I got in my car and went home. LOL. |

| Money Talk |
[Dec. 17th, 2007|11:35 pm] |
I'm going through one of my phases where I'm all about my personal finances, which means I'm spending all my free time reading about money-related issues. Over the last three-four years I've made huge strides in terms of savings and improving my credit score. I've also set up a Roth IRA as well as a Health Savings Account, as well as an online savings account that pays a high interest rate. Financially, I've got things more or less organized, except for one thing:
I've never put together a budget.
I've set savings goals before, and I have a general idea of what my monthly expenditures are, but I've never put together a hard numbers budget. Since I don't have many expenses, I'm sure I'm wasting money here and there. I know that since I moved last February, I've been hitting Starbucks a lot more regularly because it's really close to my house. Target is also just down the street and Lord KNOWS I can spend money there, so I think a budget is needed to keep track of just how much I'm spending on a monthly basis.
Anyways, I know I won't be disciplined enough to just track my spending with a pencil and pad, I need a computer-based program for this. It turns out I was already using a version of the program I need through my Fidelity brokerage account, which uses a Yodlee program called Full View. On Fidelity, Full View allows me to see my financial portfolio on one page, it lists my various savings accounts, investment accounts, even credit card accounts. Yodlee's "Money Center" program, which anyone can get on Yodlee's home site, has the same program with more features, such as BillPay and even Bill Reminder. The Bill Reminder feature sends me e-mails when I get a new bill *and* when the bill's due date is near. Also unlike Fidelity's version of Yodlee, it allows me to add my mortgage (if I had one) and the value of my home (again, if I had one).
The best thing Money Center has is a budgeting feature. I put together a proposed monthly budget, and I've already gotten emails from Money Center telling me I'm over budget on a few categories. It also puts together pie charts and other reports based on my spending.
Anyways, it's a cool program, and I wanted to share in case there is anyone on my FList that is looking for something like this. For now I'm just tinkering with my numbers, I plan on getting serious on Jan. 1st.
Oh, and here's the link in case anyone's interested:

| Three things: |
[Nov. 12th, 2007|09:09 pm] |
1. I have had "Werewolf Bar Mitzva" stuck in my head for the last three days. "Boys becoming men, men becoming wolves." Jeez.
2. I've been sick for the last week. I am so tired of spending the first few hours of my day hacking up phlegm.
3. I need new Chlark icons, preferrably one from Wrath where Clark's leaning over Chloe in her chair.
Oh, and does anyone know what episode Smallville is currently filming? I understand they have scripts up to episode 15, but I'm curius if they'll get all those scripts done with all this strike business. I've actually always thought Smallville would be a better show if they only had like 13 eps a season.
Okay, this like, the fifth thing, but where's ceelovejay? And musnic? And hipster_killer, we still need to go out for that drink! |

| Two questions about Ugly Betty: |
[Jul. 21st, 2007|03:31 pm] |
1. Why wasn't I watching this show last season?
2. Where has Henry *been* all my life?? Sweet, cute, dorktastic boys are totally up my alley.
This show hooked me so quickly. So. Quickly.
In Smallville news, I saw the promo pic of Kara. The tube top doesn't bother me, but denim shorts? In 2007? Really? Also, there's something oddly ED-esque about her. The new Nois indeed.
Edit: Also, announcement: I've got real internetz now BBs! On a real computer and everything! Expect more frequent posting now that I am no longer restricted to the net on my phone. |

| Justice and Doom. |
[May. 8th, 2007|08:06 pm] |
I haven't been following the comic strip since the first strip, but there's a short article on it in the latest TV Guide. Some marketing exec says the strip will answer questions fans have been asking for the last six years. TV Guide got to watch the last chapter, and according to them it does indeed deliver. I guess it explains how all these people and events in Clark's life are connected. There's also a comic strip image of the League walking away from Justice, and it says "You see, everyone was brought together for a reason..." There's also an image of Lex hitting Clark and them going over the bridge.
Anyway, it all sounds very interesting. I hop they mention aChloe connection! |
